First contact with albinism<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0Co-founders of Beyond Suncare<\/strong>, Lorea Bagazgoitia and Mafalda Soto, begin to work with people with albinism in\u00a0Tanzania and Malawi\u00a0<\/strong>respectively.<\/p>\n

Lorea, dermatologist<\/strong>, as a key part of the team of the Ram\u00f3n y Cajal Hospital that annually visit the Regional Dermatology Training Center in Moshi (Tanzania) to\u00a0train African specialists<\/strong>\u00a0on how to treat and operate skin cancer in people with albinism.<\/p>\n

Mafalda, pharmacist <\/strong>specialized in Tropical Medicine, begins a journey of nine years in Africa with the help of the NGO Africa Directo, coordinating sociosanitary projects<\/strong>\u00a0of support to vulnerable groups and at risk of exclusion.<\/p>\n

Their\u00a0paths cross<\/strong>\u00a0in Malawi at the end of 2009<\/p>\n

The seed of Beyond Suncare<\/h2>\n

Mafalda moves to Moshi<\/strong>\u00a0(Tanzania)<\/strong>\u00a0to coordinate a project of integral support to People with Albinism in the Regional Dermatology Training Center, center of reference in dermatological diseases of sub-Saharan Africa. There she observes how dozens of people with albinism arrive daily at the hospital with\u00a0very advanced cancers<\/strong>,\u00a0hopeless<\/strong>, in which there is “nothing to do”. A\u00a0nonconformity reaction<\/strong>, combined with a\u00a0address of the hospital involved and support from<\/strong> different\u00a0organizations<\/strong>, launches a skin cancer prevention program; it’s the first\u00a0seed\u00a0<\/strong>of Beyond Suncare.<\/p>\n

Development of the first sunscreen specially designed for the protection of people with albinism in Africa<\/h2>\n

In December of 2012, after more than\u00a0One year of R & D<\/strong>\u00a0and various studies in the field, 25 children with albinism from a school in Kilimanjaro receive\u00a0Kilisun<\/strong> for the first time. Kilisun, first photoprotector designed for the prevention of skin cancer of people with albinism in Africa, sees the light at the Regional Dermatology Trainig Centre (Moshi, Tanzania) thanks to the support of the dermocosmetic laboratory Fridda<\/strong>\u00a0Dorsch<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0NGO Africa Directo<\/strong>. Three years later, the number of beneficiaries receiving sunscreen in Tanzania, accompanied by education and dermatological consultations, amounts to\u00a0<\/span>300<\/span>0<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Inauguration of the first local sunscreen production unit for people with albinism in Africa<\/span><\/h2>\n

In July of 2013 and thanks to the support of\u00a0Under the Same Sun, The<\/strong>\u00a0International Foundation for Dermatology<\/strong> and The College of Pharmacists of La Coru\u00f1a<\/strong>, it is inaugurated in the RDTC \/ KCMC (Moshi, Tanzania) the Kilimanjaro Suncreen Production Unit<\/strong>, first local production laboratory of sun creams<\/strong>\u00a0for people with albinism in Africa. The unit, which employs workers with albinism, is not only engaged in the manufacturing of creams, but manages the\u00a0distributions <\/strong>and sessions of education\u00a0<\/strong>through a network of collaborators in the most remote places of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

Disclosure and expansion<\/h2>\n

In 2015 Mafalda is chosen \u00a0“Champion of the Albinism Casue” by the United Nations <\/strong>and throughout 2015 and 2016 participates in various forums and conferences on albinism in Africa. There is a need to\u00a0replicate the Tanzanian model<\/strong>\u00a0in other countries of sub-Saharan Africa wh<\/span>ere the leaders of the local associations call for it, mainly because of the\u00a0limitation and precariousness of services,\u00a0 both, \u00a0<\/strong>dermatological and preventive It is necessary to create an entity that allows crossing borders<\/strong>\u00a0and may guarantee the right to healthy and a dignified life among people with albinism in Africa.\u00a0Roc\u00edo D\u00edaz-Agero<\/strong>, third co-founder of Beyond, plays a key role in this phase.<\/p>\n

Beyond counts as\u00a0 advisors and collaborators<\/strong> leading international figures and organizations in the world of dermatology, photoprotection and human rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

We cross borders<\/span><\/h2>\n

In 2018 and 2019 Beyond Suncare starts an expansion process by opening projects in\u00a0Malawi, Democratic Republic of the Congo <\/strong>and\u00a0Rwanda<\/strong>. In\u00a0Malawi\u00a0<\/strong>develops a research study in partnership with the Association of Persons with Albinism and the Ministry of Health with the aim of demonstrating and disseminating the impact and cost-effectiveness of the package of preventive services of Beyond between local and international actors. The next phase: establish a local sunscreen production unit <\/strong>that cover the needs of all people with albinism in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n
